According to a report by www.zeit.de Berlin's Governing Mayor Kai Wegner is calling for financial support from the EU for the capital beyond the funding period that runs until 2027. He emphasizes the need to extend the positive effects of the EU's successful programs such as ERDF and ESF+ in all regions and to advance the transformation in order to further strengthen a united Europe.

The East German states receive billions of euros from the EU structural funds to catch up on their development and compensate for disadvantages. Around eleven billion euros will flow to Germany from the ERDF alone in the funding period 2021-2027, although the money does not exclusively benefit the eastern regions. In Berlin, funding from the structural funds in the current funding period totals more than 800 million euros.

As a financial expert, I see Kai Wegner's request as understandable, as Berlin continues to rely on financial support to advance its development. If the EU funding is actually made available for Berlin beyond 2027, this could have positive effects on the economic and social development of the capital.
