Greens are calling for a radical change of course: Saxony-Anhalt on the way to climate neutrality!

On May 13, 2025, a crucial discussion about future economic policy took place in the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt. Olaf Meister, the economic policy spokesman for the ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS parliamentary group, called for a fundamental change in the state's economy. In his speech, he emphasized that the transition to a climate-neutral and innovation-driven future is not only necessary, but also a great opportunity. “The future is not in the rearview mirror,” explained Meister and appealed to political decision-makers to take bold steps towards transformation.

The Green parliamentary group has already submitted reform proposals at the federal level, which include, among other things, a weakening of the debt brake, the introduction of a transformational electricity price and new climate protection agreements. This should serve as a basis to enable Saxony-Anhalt to develop its own innovation strategy, which can decisively support structural change. The automotive supply industry in particular is faced with the challenge of sustainably transforming, and Meister therefore called for an immediate action plan for the transition from combustion engine suppliers to electromobility.

Urgent need for action to support transformation

Meister made it clear that structural change in Saxony-Anhalt must be actively supported. Investments in renewable energies, the hydrogen economy and the circular economy are at the top of the agenda. Strengthening small and medium-sized businesses and targeted support measures are considered central goals. Problems such as a shortage of skilled workers, bureaucracy and unresolved succession regulations must be urgently addressed in order to secure the country's economic substance.

Another crucial aspect is the promotion of science, research and education. Meister sees great potential here for Saxony-Anhalt to position itself as a model region for successful structural change. He also called for improvements in the conditions for start-ups and easier recognition of foreign professional qualifications in order to make the business location more attractive.

The role of climate neutrality and energy supply

The discussion about the economic transformation of Saxony-Anhalt takes place against the background of a comprehensive analysis project by the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE. According to a study, it deals with the transformation paths to Germany's climate neutrality by 2045. The focus is on the goal anchored in the Climate Protection Act (KSG), which has been in force since June 2021.

The study includes four scenarios that reflect social and geopolitical developments and highlights the transformation of the energy system at the federal state level. Important sectors such as the energy sector, industry, buildings and transport are analyzed in detail. The REMod energy system model plays a central role in adequately visualizing developments at the federal state level. Geopolitical factors and the role of federalism are crucial for the success of the energy transition, according to the study's findings.

Overall, it is clear that Saxony-Anhalt is in a crucial phase. The courageous change of course in economic policy could be crucial to successfully mastering the challenges of the future.
