Crafts and energy policy: Important topics on the agenda
The Central Association of German Crafts (ZDH) has made clear demands on economic policy. Comprehensive career orientation at all types of schools, including high schools, is required. Robert Habeck received great applause for his suggestion that all federal states should organize a craft day at high schools in the future.
Another important concern that does not only affect trade is the secure and affordable energy supply. At a forum as part of the opening of the trade fair, there was a heated exchange between Habeck and the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder. Söder criticized the end of German nuclear power plants as unreasonable and pointed to the expansion of nuclear power in other European countries. Habeck countered that nuclear power was too expensive and emphasized that the price of gas in Germany was now back to the level before the Ukraine war. He suggested that companies could increasingly rely on solar roofs and wind turbines to supply their own energy.
The figures show the immense importance of crafts in Germany: with one million craft businesses, around 5.7 million employees and 350,000 trainees, the sector generated sales of 735 billion euros in 2022. These figures illustrate the important role that crafts play in the German economy and underline the need for concrete measures to support and further develop the sector.
