Litmus test for the Liberals: Union is putting FDP to the test today

The Union parliamentary group submitted an explosive motion in the Bundestag today to put the FDP to the test. This application serves as a litmus test to check how serious the FDP is with its recently approved rescue plan for the German economy. In their application, the CDU/CSU is calling for similar measures to those of the FDP, which had previously written off large parts of the Union's resolutions. A vote will be taken to support measures such as the gradual elimination of the solidarity surcharge, the reduction of taxes to an internationally competitive level, the increase in the basic tax allowance and the child tax allowance, the introduction of tax advantages for overtime, the compensation of the cold progression for 2025 and 2026, the suspension of the supply chain law and the recalculation of the citizen's allowance.

The Union parliamentary group makes it clear that the FDP can, through its decision in this vote, potentially end the traffic light government and bear responsibility for it. Green party deputy Andreas Audretsch and SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich have already expressed their rejection of the FDP's rescue measures. The CDU is committed to an economic turnaround and hopes that the FDP will prove through its participation that it is not just making empty promises.

The FDP is under pressure to follow its words with actions, as a rejection of the application could be interpreted as a failure of its plan and as deception of voters. The influential CDU Economic Council is concerned about a possible failure of the FDP and emphasizes the importance of the party as an important voice of the social market economy, the preservation of which is in the interest of the economic wing of the Union.
