Markus Söder does not rule out running for chancellor
Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder recently mentioned at the Ludwig Erhard Summit on Lake Tegernsee that he does not fundamentally rule out running for chancellor in the 2025 federal elections. He emphasized that in his opinion a change of government was necessary and named Friedrich Merz as a top candidate based on good polls. Söder expressed optimism about his own chances and explained that he also had good survey results.
Although there are international, social and economic challenges, Söder assumes that the incumbent federal government made up of the SPD, Greens and FDP will remain together until the end of their term in office despite disagreements. However, he expressed concerns about the effectiveness of this government and stressed that he hopes for a strong result for the Union in the upcoming federal elections.
Söder is confident that the Union will achieve a result of “clearly 30 plus X” in the next elections, which means that they do not need another coalition partner and can determine the direction. Regarding a possible coalition, he ruled out working with the Greens and stated that a government without the Greens would be a positive signal for the future.
The Ludwig Erhard Summit, initiated by the Weimer Media Group and Die Bayerische Wirtschaft (VBW and Bayme VBM), offered a platform for important discussions and food for thought on topics related to economics and politics.
