Small and medium-sized businesses are worried: EU economic policy is the cause of dissatisfaction
The German middle class shows great dissatisfaction with the economic policy of the European Union and criticizes the lack of impetus for growth. According to a recent survey, over two thirds of those surveyed give this policy a grade of 4, 5 or 6. Many companies see the wrong direction in Brussels and are suffering from increasing levels of regulation. Almost 90 percent of the company representatives surveyed complain about growing bureaucratization due to EU decisions in the last two years.
The results of a survey commissioned by the Family Business and Politics Foundation, in which over 1,000 company representatives took part and which was carried out by the Ifo Institute, show that many companies have to hire additional staff in order to meet the increasing reporting requirements. These numbers are explosive and have an impact on current issues such as the migration of domestic companies to other countries, especially to the USA.
Industry President Siegfried Russwurm described European supply chain legislation as “out of touch with reality” and without practical suitability. Although business associations are committed to protecting human rights and improving production conditions, they see the new rules as useless. The Family Business and Politics Foundation also expressed sharp criticism of EU economic policy because it makes foreign trade more complicated and bureaucratic without significantly improving the protection of human rights and the environment.
The survey shows that medium-sized businesses see growth in Germany and Europe at risk. About half of those surveyed expect a negative business environment in the near future. According to those surveyed, the EU must focus primarily on de-bureaucratization, as increasing regulation demotivates the workforce and devours valuable resources. In addition to regulation, companies are also concerned about issues such as Europe's competitiveness and the fight against cyber attacks. Nevertheless, the basic freedoms of the EU internal market such as the free movement of goods, the free movement of people and the freedom to provide services and capital are viewed positively.
