New boss of De Nederlandsche Bank: Olaf Sleijpen will take over from July!

Olaf Sleijpen will take over responsibility as the new boss of De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) from July 1, 2025. The Dutch government made this decision and thereby appointed the successor to Klaas Knot, who had been in office since 2011 and whose term of office is now ending.

Sleijpen, who currently heads the monetary policy department at the DNB, brings extensive experience as a central banker. The 54-year-old was personal assistant to then ECB President Wim Duisenberg from 2001 to 2004 and was appointed to the DNB board in February 2020.

Experiences and responsibilities

In his current role, Sleijpen is responsible for diverse areas such as economic policy, research, financial stability as well as payment infrastructure and statistics. His appointment as DNB boss also means that he will take a seat on the Council of the European Central Bank (ECB). This also positions him as a deputy member of the ECB Executive Board.

Sleijpen has also been active academically and has been Professor of European Economic Policy at the Maastricht School of Business and Economics since 2007. He is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Blue Fund, a network supporting LGBTQ emancipation, and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Peter Elverding Chair in Sustainable Corporate Regulation at Maastricht University since 2018.

Career

Prior to his current role, Sleijpen held various management positions, including in the pension fund sector at ABP and APG from 2004 to 2011. He began his professional career in the 1990s at the DNB, where he worked as an economist and in senior positions in the communications department. His academic education includes a degree with honors in economics from Maastricht University in 1992 and a doctorate in economics from the University of Groningen in 1999.

In an initial statement, Sleijpen said that it was a great honor for him to take over the management of the DNB and to tackle the important tasks and challenges in this role. Taking on this position is seen by many as crucial for future monetary policy in the Netherlands and its influence on the European financial landscape.
