Tesla on course for growth despite job cuts in Grünheide

The US car manufacturer Tesla plans to continue expanding its factory despite the planned reduction of 400 jobs in Grünheide. According to Tesla project manager Theresa Eggler, the job cuts are due to the current market situation in the electric vehicle segment. The company's development plans were revised and discussed again following a citizen survey. The planned site expansion of the factory was discussed publicly with representatives of state authorities, districts, Deutsche Bahn and Tesla, as ultimately the residents and community representatives have to decide on the development plan.

The development plan plays a crucial role in Tesla's long-term growth in Grünheide. Tesla had previously reduced the expansion plans in the development plan to take into account the concerns of the residents of Grünheide. This happened in response to a negative majority of local residents regarding large-scale deforestation. The adjusted plans now take into account the preservation of around 50 hectares of forest instead of using it for industrial or commercial areas.

In addition, infrastructure projects such as the new construction of the Fangschleuse train station and a new state road to shift traffic to rail should continue to be made possible. Time is of the essence as a decision must be taken by the end of the year to avoid a delay of four years. An essential component is the new Fangschleuse train station and the connection to the planned Tesla freight station, which must be implemented by 2026 at the latest in order to ensure the planned relief of the road by 2030 at the earliest.

The public discussion and consultation on the changed development plans was viewed positively. The next phase of consultations will continue at the May meeting of community representatives, where alternative planning options that would preserve more forest will also be discussed. The possibility of further discussions with DB project manager Peter Schulze regarding alternative suggestions is also mentioned. The discussions and planning should continue in the spirit of a transparent and objective approach.
