Change of board at FMA: Austria is looking for successor to Eduard Müller

The government is once again acting in great haste, as the Ministry of Finance under Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) is re-advertising the head position in the Financial Markets Authority (FMA). This currently affects Eduard Müller, who belongs to the ÖVP and whose mandate runs until July 5, 2025. Nevertheless, a successor to the former section head in the Ministry of Finance and short-term Finance Minister is already being sought.

In addition to Müller, Helmut Ettl, a social democrat and central banker on leave, also works in the FMA. Ettl has been on the FMA board since 2008 and his contract was recently extended until February 2028. Interestingly, Ettl was appointed to the supervisory authority on the OeNB ticket, while Müller was placed in this position by the Ministry of Finance under the ÖVP.

It is worth noting that the turquoise-blue coalition government of Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) originally planned to legally replace Ettl and reduce the FMA board to one member. However, this project was not pursued further due to the Ibiza affair. Now the focus is on the new advertisement for the FMA chief position, while the background and political influences of this decision raise questions.
