The FDP is currently facing the challenge of implementing liberal economic policy in the coalition with the Greens and the SPD. A current report points out that the Greens and large parts of the SPD lack a basic understanding of economic relationships. The idea that money falls from the sky and that the welfare state can be financed indefinitely shapes their ideas on energy policy and tax policy. But the financial challenges in Germany, caused by demographic developments and a tense migration policy, require a rethink.
The FDP has recognized this rethinking and has woken up to the energy transition since Robert Habeck's proposal for heat pump funding. Finance Minister Christian Lindner has recognized that he has to play Lambsdorff in order to help liberal economic policy achieve a breakthrough. A recently published statement from the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry of Finance supports him in this. The advisory board criticizes the idea of a state-capped electricity price to support energy-intensive industry and instead calls for an expansion of the energy supply and an improvement in the location conditions for the industry.
A group of members of the Bundestag is also forming within the FDP that pursues a market economy orientation. They call themselves “Otto's heirs” and refer to the liberal economics minister Otto Graf Lambsdorff. The exact composition of the group is not known, but in addition to Linda Teuteberg, Wolfgang Kubicki and Frank Schäffler, state secretaries and a minister are also said to be there.
These developments show that the FDP is increasingly committed to liberal economic policy and is also finding support for it within the party. It remains to be seen how this development will affect the coalition and the German economy.
