World Trade Organization WTO: boss wants to celebrate successes

The head of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, is determined to bring the 164 divided members of the organization together. Before the upcoming summit in Abu Dhabi, she optimistically announced: “We will do it.” The ministerial meeting, which will take place from February 26th to 29th, is intended to give the ailing WTO new impetus.

The WTO, headquartered in Geneva, serves as a regulatory forum for global trade in goods and services. Over 75 percent of global trade is conducted according to WTO guidelines. Despite internal disputes and challenges, there is hope for positive impulses from the upcoming meeting in Abu Dhabi.

As a small success story for the trading club, it should be noted that East Timor and the Comoros are welcomed as new members. This shows that despite existing differences, a certain cohesion and expansion of the organization is possible. With this background, the WTO is entering the upcoming ministerial meeting with the aim of setting the course for a successful future and strengthening global trade relations.
