Economic experts rate Germany as a satisfactory location
A current analysis of the economic situation in Germany shows an improved situation, but economists only rate Germany as a location “satisfactory”. A survey by the Munich Ifo Institute showed that the average rating is 3.4, which is just about sufficient. Only 20 percent of the economists surveyed rated the location as “good,” while only two percent rated it as “very good.” Overall, 23 percent viewed the location as “poor” or “inadequate”.
The economists surveyed by the Munich Ifo Institute consider Germany to be poorly positioned in international comparison. The bureaucracy and regulations were particularly criticized. The experts emphasize that reforms such as cutting bureaucracy and increasing investments in infrastructure and digitalization are needed, while at the same time adequate pension reforms should be implemented.
A study by the auditing firm Ernst & Young confirmed the assessment of Germany's mediocre location quality. Last year, foreign companies' interest in investing in Germany fell. The main reasons for this were bureaucracy, inadequate digitalization and high levels of uncertainty in the administrative and economic areas.
According to economists, the weak points of Germany as a business location mainly include regulation and bureaucracy, followed by costs, uncertainties regarding raw materials and energy, and inadequate digitalization. Political institutions and human capital, on the other hand, are seen as strengths of the location. The discrepancy between economists' assessments and public discussions shows the complexity of the challenges facing Germany as a business location.
