Price increase for Frankfurt: District heating up to 36% more expensive from July!
Mainova AG has announced that it will significantly increase district heating prices from July 2025. This measure affects approximately 60,000 households and numerous large customers in Frankfurt and is due to various factors, including changing market conditions and new regulations. The new price of 139 euros net for the megawatt hour represents an increase of 21 euros compared to the previous 118 euros and is therefore below the national average of 152 euros. Loud frankfurt.t-online.de Around 80% of buyers pay around 26% more, while 20% have to expect an increase of between 25% and 36%.
The decision to increase prices comes at a time when a comprehensive climate change is being sought. Mainova is planning to invest billions to convert the district heating supply by 2040 at the latest. The goal is to make Frankfurt climate-neutral by 2035. The modernization of the West thermal power plant, which will cost around 350 million euros, is part of this strategy. This switch to gas-based and later hydrogen-capable operation is expected to save around 400,000 tons of CO₂ annually from 2027.
Restructuring of the energy supply
In order to achieve the climate goals, Mainova is planning numerous measures. This includes the planned construction of a biomass power plant that will supply former gas customers, as well as the laying of around 300 kilometers of new district heating pipes in Frankfurt. The total investment volume for this infrastructure conversion will be in the multi-digit billion range.
Interestingly, Mainova will implement a reduction in heat prices as early as next year. From October 1, 2024, the price of labor will drop by 18 percent as the cost of fuels such as natural gas and coal has fallen. The emission price for CO₂ costs is reduced by around 27 percent. The basic price, however, increases by around 3.2 percent, and the transfer price also increases by around 3.5 percent. The levy price remains unchanged at 0.19 ct/kWh (gross). This price adjustment will impact customers differently. The annual costs for an example single-family home decrease by around 422 euros, while the costs for residential units in an apartment building could decrease by around 224 euros per unit mainova.de reported.
The price adjustments in the Mainova Heat Classic tariff take place annually on October 1st, while the Mainova Heat ClassicFix tariff provides for a two-year price fixation. The monthly installment payments will be automatically adjusted after the next annual consumption bill. The price formula for Mainova district heating is designed to reflect the costs transparently and to take the conditions on the heating market into account. In the long term, Mainova aims to make the heating market in Germany climate-neutral by 2045.
